What makes a good logo?

When creating a new business, or making the decision to update your existing branding, your logo should be the top priority. Your logo plays a major part in making your brand a successful one – it’s the first thing that a potential client will see, therefore it needs to make a strong first impression.

So, what does make a good logo?

A good logo is simple yet memorable. Distinctive yet practical. Less is more!

A simple logo makes for easy recognition, even at the quickest of glances, and allows it to be versatile. Versatility is one of the most important qualities of a good logo design! Your logo needs to look great when printed (on your business cards, letterheads etc.), digitally (social media accounts, website and on mobile devices) and when scaled right down to the smallest stamp size or blown up for a large billboard.

Some other aspects to consider when designing a logo is if it would still be effective if it was printed in one colour or if it was printed in reverse i.e. a light colour on a dark background. A trick to create a versatile logo that looks impressive in black and white is to create it first without any colours. Once you are satisfied with the design you can add your colours.

To have a concept behind the logo is also very important, as it can communicate who you are, what you offer and the intended message of the your business. You could have the most attractive logo in the world, but if your potential client has no idea what your brand is then you’ve missed a trick.

Your logo also needs to be business appropriate. For example, if you are designing a logo for a children’s clothing range, it would be appropriate to use a playful font and colour scheme. The same would not apply for a luxurious, high end fashion house.
