Best Practices for Social Media Marketing

Posting on social media is easy. Getting people to actually care? That’s where things get a bit trickier.

With algorithms changing, attention spans shrinking, and platforms multiplying (hello, Threads and Lemon8), it’s no wonder brands can feel a little overwhelmed. But here’s the good news: you don’t need a massive budget or a team of influencers to boost your engagement. You just need a strategy and a few smart habits.

At TLH, we’ve helped brands of all sizes grow their audiences and spark genuine conversations online. So, if you’re ready to get more likes, comments, shares (and meaningful connections), here are our top tips.

1. Know Your Audience Like You Know Your Mates

Before you post anything, ask yourself: “Who am I talking to?” If you don’t know what your audience cares about, you’re basically shouting into the void.

Are they professionals looking for tips? Parents juggling 10 things at once? Eco-conscious Gen Zs who love a good meme? The more you understand them, the more your content will click.

2. Show Up Consistently (But Don’t Burn Out)

You don’t need to post every day, but you do need to show up regularly. Consistency builds trust and tells the algorithm, “Hey, this account is active, boost their stuff!”

But here’s the catch: quality beats quantity every time. Posting five okayish posts won’t do as much as two strong, well-thought-out ones.

TLH Tip: Create a simple content plan you can actually stick to. Use scheduling tools to stay on track.

3. Mix Up Your Content (Seriously)

If every post is a sales pitch, people will tune out fast. The best social feeds have a good mix: educational, entertaining, behind-the-scenes, and yes, a little promotional too.

Think tips, tutorials, stories from your team, user-generated content, and even memes (if it fits your vibe). Keep it fresh, and people will continue to come back.

Try the 80/20 rule. 80% value, 20% promotion. It’s a good balance between helpful and hustle.

4. Make It Visual, Always

You don’t need a fancy design degree to make good visuals, but you do need to grab attention. Social media is visual first, and posts with strong graphics, short videos, or bold captions always perform better.

Use tools like Canva to create branded graphics or repurpose one great photo into a Reel, Story, and post.

5. Don’t Post and Ghost

Social media isn’t a megaphone; it’s a conversation (we love this quote). The algorithm loves it when you actually engage with your audience, so reply to comments, jump into conversations, and don’t be afraid to show personality.

Spending 10–15 minutes each day interacting with other accounts will make a huge difference, trust me, we are kind of the experts.

6. Watch the Numbers (But Don’t Obsess)

Engagement isn’t just about likes. Saves, shares, clicks, comments, they all matter. And if something flops? Don’t stress. Use it as data to do better next time.

Check your insights weekly. What posts got shared? What time do your followers show up? What content made people stop and scroll? Let the numbers guide your next move.

7. Be Human

People connect with people, not faceless brands. So don’t be afraid to show the human side of your business. Celebrate wins, admit mistakes, introduce your team, or share what’s happening behind the scenes.

Use Instagram Stories or LinkedIn posts to give that “we’re just real people doing our best” vibe. We are all nosy, show the people what they want!

Social media doesn’t have to feel like a full-time job. With a bit of planning, a dash of creativity, and a focus on connection, you’ll start to see better results (and enjoy the process more, too).
